Fair Chore Division: Why It Usually Breaks Down

"We split housework fine" — until someone has to ask if the dishwasher's been emptied yet. That feeling is almost never about unwillingness. It's about how invisible the managing itself is.

Where it goes wrong

Invisible work doesn't count

Figuring out what needs doing, keeping track of when something's due again, remembering who did it last time — that takes just as much energy as the task itself, but nobody sees it happen. Usually only the doing gets counted, not the managing.

"Asking" becomes a chore of its own

If you constantly have to ask whether something's been done, you've become the reminder yourself. That's exactly the work you were trying to divide in the first place.

A verbal agreement has no memory

"We take turns with the bathroom" works fine until someone's tired, away, or just forgets — and then the argument starts about whose turn it actually was.

What actually works

Write down the invisible tasks too

Not just "clean the bathroom" — also "keep track of when the bathroom is due again". Once that lives somewhere other than one person's head, it stops being that person's job by default.

Divide by time, not by task count

Five small chores don't balance out one big one. Look at how much time something takes, not how many lines are on the list.

Don't discuss it in the moment

A conversation about division during the actual irritation rarely goes well. Plan a calm moment for it, away from any specific complaint.

Let a system do the reminding, not a person

Once the reminder comes from a system instead of a partner or housemate, the feeling of nagging — or being nagged — disappears for both sides.

Let Jia keep track of whose turn it is

In Cleaning you assign a chore to one or more housemates. Turn on "Rotate between members" and Jia keeps track of whose turn it is, and whoever is up is shown first, with a darker ring around their avatar. Nobody has to ask in the group chat whose turn it is. Keeping your own chore schedule is free; sharing it with housemates needs Premium (new households get that automatically for 14 days, no payment details).
